My (Jody Bender) grandfather JE Williamson had a vision. Perhaps what started as a “summer home” intention developed into a working dairy farm. Renovations that began in the 1940’s to update the farmhouse included tiled bathrooms, cedar-lined closets, linen closets and a dining room addition built off the back of the house. This addition included custom made cabinets that offered additional storage, a bar sink, and many windows to let in natural light.
Hospitality would be a one-word description for my childhood home and only home outside of married life I have ever known. My grandmother cooked and baked in the ample kitchen and entertained in the expansive living room. Dinner parties, gathering before and after dining out and the opportunity to get a “sweet” while watching the adults play cards. Lots of food, drink and the smell of cigars.
Christmas was our holiday to host and was celebrated with not only immediate family but aunts, uncles, cousins and friends coming and going all day long. Much of the day captured on film for posterity. Christmas dinner included tables scattered around the house with much food, laughter and love! Having a dedicated “TV room” was handy for the children to play games as well as watch TV.
Family gatherings continued to be of utmost importance to my parents. Even after leaving to start our own families we still came back for Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations. Whether we lived close by or travelled home the 5 bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs were full and kept the mayhem separated from mom and dad downstairs.
Summertime on the farm began Memorial weekend continuing through Labor Day when we as kids could count on the pool being full and ready to cool off on those hot summer days. With a full kitchen, covered eating area, dressing rooms and a shower it was our home away from home to enjoy meals (every night) and even sleep overs under the stars. The 4th of July holiday meant lots of people, special pool games, a scavenger hunt, plenty of food and a few fireworks!
The “pool gang” were friends that came together so often that they became family. So many happy and special memories were made including wedding receptions, birthday parties, wedding and baby showers.
Yes that is the bottom line so many special memories were made and will continue to live on in grand-children and even a great-grandchild or two! A special place we called “the farm”…
